Knights of the Round Table

The Knights of the Round Table is a Recognition Program sponsored jointly by Preston High School and their Partners in Education for students who maintain a 3.5 GPA and have three or less absences for each 10 weeks.  Students are issued a card that allows them free admission to athletic events at PHS, discount prices for theater productions, as well as discounts at many stores throughout the area.  There were 359 Knights of the Round Table at the end of the first 10 weeks of the 2005-2006 school year.

 

Distinguished Writers Program

The Distinguished Writers Program recognizes students for achieving the highest score possible on the 10th grade Writing Assessment Test.  A total of 31 students received the award for the 2004-2005 school year.

 

Governor's School of the Arts/ Governor's Honor Academy

The Governor's School of the Arts and the Governor's Honor Academy are highly competitive summer programs offered by the State.  The School of the Arts is a program for sophomores.  Students must complete an applications, interview, and an audition in their particular discipline to be accepted.  The Honor Academy is a program for juniors designed to stimulate and support excellence in education through a multi-week summer program.  The mission of the academy is to operate an academically rich environment designed to honor high ability/high achieving students in an institution of higher education, challenging students to grow intellectually and creatively.  In 2005, PHS had three students attend these programs.

 

AP Courses/Exams; Dual Credit Classes

More than 100 students are enrolled in AP Courses at Preston High School.  These are rigorous college-level courses offered in math and science.  Students are awarded college credit based on their AP Exam score.  Tests are scored on a scale of 1-5.  Students scoring three or above earn college credit.  In 2005, 92% of PHS science students and 85% of PHS math students earned college credit.

 

There are 256 students enrolled in dual credit English and History classes at PHS.  In 2005, PHS students earned 717 hours of college credit.

 

National Honor Society

The National Honor Society is composed of students who have demonstrated exceptional scholarship, character, leadership and service.  Students must maintain a 3.5 GPA and be endorsed by 90% of faculty members responding to the student application.  During the past six years, this organization has raised more than $6,000 for the Ronald McDonald House and the West Virginia State Police Toys for Tots program.
