The Federal Bureau of Prisons, as part of the U.S. Department of Justice, is charged with the responsibility of managing and operating all federal penal and correctional institutions throughout the United States.  These institutions are used to house persons convicted of violating federal statutes or persons being held awaiting trial for such violations.  They include penitentiaries, correctional institutions, camps, detention centers, medical facilities, community corrections centers and halfway houses.
