Seasonal Technician Position-Recreation
Description
DESCRIPTION OF JOB DUTIES:
The Seasonal Technician will assist the Associate Director, the Program Assistant & Events Producer, and other Friends of the Cheat staff in maintenance, monitoring, and active recreation projects, as well as other events and activities:
•
Assist and Lead Friends of the Cheat maintenance duties at recreation sites, such as the Cheat River Festival Site & Campground, Cheat River Rail Trail, & Trailhead. This will include weed-eating, mowing, general maintenance, site improvements, and other activities.
•
Assist FOC staff with monitoring activities. Monitoring includes:
o
Trail & Campground surveys
o
Trail counter data and system management
o
Cheat River Water Trail counter data and surveys
o
Cheat River Rail Trail Phase 2 Construction – as needed
•
Assist FOC Staff with outreach activities, Outreach includes:
o
Cheat River Festival
o
Trailhead & Trail community outreach events
o
Allegheny Trail work days with WV Scenic Trails Association
o
Miscellaneous office support
Friends of the Cheat
This position will require working primarily outside in various and potentially inclement weather conditions as well as working in and near water sources such as rivers and lakes. It will also include using and maintaining various forms of equipment, including motorized vehicles and small machines in a safe manner.
SUPERVISOR
The Seasonal Technician will report to Owen Mulkeen, the Associate Director.
Responsibilities
DURATION:
April 2026 – October 2026. For the months of April, September, and October, a “ramp up and ramp down” schedule can be negotiated depending on FOC work needs and the Seasonal Technician’s personal, education, and work life balance.
SCHEDULE: The typical work schedule will be 32 hours per week from Monday through Thursday. Additional hours up to 40 hours can be worked by the Seasonal Technician, if pre- approved by the Associate Director. Fridays and weekend dates may be requested for Seasonal Technician work with advanced notice. A work day will consist of an 8 hour day, but may be extended to a 12 hour day depending on the work need. No overtime is permitted for this position. All duties must conclude at or before a 40 hour workweek
COMPENSATION
$15.00 per hour, mileage reimbursement at current federal rate

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful applicant will possess the following qualifications:
•
Must be 18 years of age or older and a US citizen
•
Must have a Valid Driver’s License and acceptable driving record, a reliable form of transportation, and ability to travel locally
•
Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and temperatures for long durations of time
•
Must be comfortable around large machinery, heavy equipment, and construction sites
•
Must be comfortable around moving water
•
Must be able to navigate to and from project sites using hard copy maps and or mapping software (Google Maps)
•
Experience using maintenance equipment such as riding lawnmower, chainsaw, weed-eaters, trimmers, and pruners and other power tools and small machines
•
Passion for work/pursuit of career in Outdoor Recreation/Natural Resources
