Schools Are Great in Preston County

The Preston County Schools District serves a total enrollment of approximately 4,400 students, housed in ten total schools, including seven preschools, eight elementary, seven middle and one high school.

The District’s programming takes a multifaceted approach to prepare students for success after secondary education. An extensive list of scholarships is available for the varied interests of students graduating from Preston High School. Additionally, the Career and Technical Program at Preston County High School is a vital resource to connect students with high-demand careers in the area. 

The Mountaineer ChalleNGe Academy is designed to give academically challenged teens a second chance at obtaining their basic education. High School Diplomas are available for those who qualify under the Option 1 Pathway. 

The mission of the Mountaineer ChalleNGe Academy is to train and mentor selected at-risk youth to become contributing members of society using the 8 Core Components in a quasi-military environment during a 22-week residential and one-year Post-Residential follow-up program.

West Virginia University (WVU) offers more than 350 undergraduate and graduate degree programs taught by nearly 3,000 faculty members to more than 26,000 students in nearby Morgantown. Preston County residents can receive a high-quality education while living at home, less than 20 miles away from WVU.

Located just to the west of Preston County, Fairmont State University offers a broad selection of associate, bachelor and master degree programs in more than 90 fields of study. Its undergraduate enrollment centers around 3,500 students annually, who participate in the most popular programs of Business Administration, Criminal Justice and Education.

Pierpont Community & Technical College serves North Central West Virginia through various education and workforce training services. It offers more than 40 Associate of Arts, Associate of Applied Science and Certificate of Applied Science degree programs in three academic schools: the School of Business, Aviation and Technology; the School of General Education and Professional Studies; and the School of Health Sciences. The Center for Workforce Education provides a range of customized training to assist companies in retention and expansion plans.

WVU Potomac State College is located in Keyser, WV and is a part of the West Virginia University System. It offers 55 two-year degree programs, six career/technical degree programs and six bachelors of applied science degrees covering four years of study.
