Brandonville

History of Brandonville

Brandonville, situated north of Interstate 68, derives its name from Colonel Jonathan Brandon. He laid out the town in 1827, having erected the first house on land he acquired in 1786. Brandonville gained renown for its historic Brandonville stoves from old iron furnaces. The town also hosted one of the early agricultural papers and remains predominantly an agricultural community to this day.

Brandonville Today: What Makes Us Unique

Today, the town of 84 people is the site of the historic Hagans Homestead, also known as Barnes Hotel and Stone Manor Tourist Home. Originally built in 1830 as a single-family dwelling, the large 2.5 story, "L"-shaped house built of native cut sandstone was maintained by the Barnes family as a hotel during the early 1900s and later as a tourist home in the ’40s and ‘50s. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

Old Hemlock is a property that preserves and promotes the legacy of Preston County residents George Bird and Kay Evans. It includes a 230-acre nature and wildlife preserve containing virgin hemlock trees maintained in its natural state. The Old Hemlock house, added to the National Registry of Historic Place in 2015, was built in 1815 on property originally deeded in 1782 and is the oldest preserved residence in Preston County, West Virginia.

Today, local residents and visitors alike go to Glade Farms Campground for camping, hiking, fishing and other outdoor recreation. It offers 85 total camping sites, 65 of which are full hook-up and 20 are rustic. Its local hiking and biking trail connects to historic Fort Morris.
