Preston Co. community garden helps to fight food insecurity

West Virginia University Extension held its “Throwin’ Dirt” event on Saturday in the Preston County Newburg community garden as part of their participation in the statewide “Grow This! Throwdown”.
Dozens of community members volunteered their time to the garden used by the Newburgrows food pantry, which started last September and helps deliver food and other essential items to people in Newburg, Tunnelton, and Fellowsville. Director of Newburgrows Food Pantry Nichole Larew expressed her pride in the pantry.
” It’s a little different from other pantries, it’s not a place where people come and can shop for stuff, this is a delivery only for people that are homebound and elderly that can’t come out and get food,” Larew said. “So basically, I’ve had the churches and different community organizations reach out and scan for people that were in need, I have a list of people, I deliver every Thursday.”
