Investing in the Future: the Power of Technical Education in Preston County
July 2, 2025
As industries evolve and workforce demands shift, technical education prepares the next generation of skilled professionals. In Preston County, West Virginia, high schools, technical colleges and higher education institutions equip students with the knowledge and hands-on experience to succeed in high-demand careers.
Preston High School (PHS) students interested in Career & Technical Education (CTE) are encouraged to develop their skills through state and national competitions in fields like carpentry, welding and health services.
Pierpont Community & Technical College is one of the region’s outstanding institutions, shaping the county’s workforce through an innovative dual-credit program for the area’s middle and high school students.
“As we continue to grow Preston County’s economy, it is essential that we provide our high school and college students with access to high-quality CTE,” said Roberta Baylor, Executive Director, Preston County Economic Development Authority. “These competitions and programs prepare students for in-demand jobs and help our local industries thrive by ensuring they have access to a skilled workforce.”
PHS Students Stand Out at State Competitions
SkillsUSA aims to improve the quality of our nation’s future skilled workforce through the development of personal and technical skills grounded in academics. PHS sent students to the SkillsUSA West Virginia State Leadership & Skills Conference in March with impressive results.
Elijah Mayle left the event a state champion in the Skilled Carpentry Showcase, as did Bryson Evans (Electrical Construction Wiring) and Dayton Wilson (Basic Residential Wiring). Additionally, 10 PHS Business Computer Applications students earned Microsoft Office certifications, while another 11 participated in the SkillsUSA welding competition.
PHS also was represented at the 2025 HOSA (Future Health Professionals) State Leadership Conference and had winners in multiple categories, including nursing assisting, respiratory therapy, veterinary science and forensic science.
Ethan White, a PHS junior, will also be the only representative from West Virginia at the prestigious U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize National Competition this summer at Washington University in St. Louis, MO.
