Newburg

History of Newburg

Newburg, originally known as Stop 88 due to its location 88 miles west of the B&O station in Cumberland, MD, was formally incorporated in 1868 as the most recent town along the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad route. The town's growth was closely tied to the railroad, which facilitated the expansion of the mining industry by enabling coal transportation. Newburg gained recognition beyond West Virginia for the tragic 1886 Newburg Mine Disaster, where 39 men lost their lives in a gas explosion at the Mountain Brook Shaft, which was then the deepest in the state at 355 feet. Today, Newburg has an approximate population of 252 residents.
