Newburg, originally known as Stop 88 due to its location 88 miles west of the B&O station in Cumberland, MD, was formally incorporated in 1868 as the most recent town along the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad route. The town's growth was closely tied to the railroad, which facilitated the expansion of the mining industry by enabling coal transportation. Newburg gained recognition beyond West Virginia for the tragic 1886 Newburg Mine Disaster, where 39 men lost their lives in a gas explosion at the Mountain Brook Shaft, which was then the deepest in the state at 355 feet. Today, Newburg has an approximate population of 252 residents.
The Newburg Senior Center belongs to the Preston County Senior Citizens, Inc., where residents 60 years of age or older have access to healthy activities, camaraderie and programming for health, medical and financial needs.
The CJ Raceway is motocross and ATV offroad track in Newburg that hosts various events throughout the year, such as the AMSOIL Buckwheat 100 and participates in the NECXC Racing Circuit.
