Cheat River Rail-Trail open for recreation in Kingwood
April 25, 2025
Just in time for warmer weather, the Cheat River Rail-Trail is open and ready for visitors in Preston County.
Friends of Cheat held a ribbon cutting event for the Cheat River Rail-Trail on Friday, a 25-year-long project that is finally seeing fruition. Currently, the trail stretched three miles north towards Route 7 and also has ponds open for fishing, greenspace for activities, public restrooms, picnic tables, a takeout for whitewater rafting and kayaking.
Phase two of the Cheat River Rail-Trail is still under construction and consists of a 500-foot-long trestle bridge with lookout points, another five miles of trail and four additional bridges. Friends of Cheat hopes to have phase two completed by 2026.
