Economic Development in Preston County: Your Business Gateway to Success

    May 31, 2026

Economic growth is the foundation of a thriving community. The ability of local businesses to operate and thrive generates energy and momentum toward jobs for residents, robust financial opportunities, and a healthy quality of life. Businesses do not operate in a vacuum, though. Established business owners and entrepreneurs alike need assistance.

The Preston County Economic Development Authority (PCEDA) is a county non-profit organization created to assist with current and future business development in Preston County, WV. PCEDA’s charter spans all communities in Preston County, working with local, regional, and state economic development agencies. Its host of initiatives in business development, workforce development, training opportunities, marketing education, in-person events, and more help new businesses get established and help current businesses grow and expand.

Why does PCEDA own and lease property and buildings?

PCEDA owns and leases properties and buildings to attract new businesses and support existing businesses in the area. Properties and buildings owned or leased by PCEDA have the added advantage of being site-ready, which simplifies setup and reduces launch time. Leases or purchases through the PCEDA often lower entry barriers for some business owners, helping them become a thriving part of the Preston County local economy more quickly. Finally, unlike the traditional real estate markets, the PCEDA prioritizes job creation and investment over profit when entering into sales or lease agreements.

What Support Is Available for Local Businesses Looking to Expand?

Existing businesses in Preston County are the backbone of the local economy. PCEDA works tirelessly to support their continued growth by helping connect businesses with problem-solving resources, financial assistance programs, grant opportunities, and workforce training initiatives.

Every business is different, which is why economic development can never be a one-size-fits-all solution. PCEDA works with businesses on a one-on-one basis to determine what solutions are needed. These can include providing advice and technical assistance, accessing low-interest business loans, administering funds for equipment upgrades or infrastructure improvements, and partnering with workforce training programs to ensure a steady pipeline of qualified employees to help a business grow.

How Does PCEDA Attract New Business to the Area?

While existing businesses play an important role in the local economy, new businesses are needed to create new opportunities, encourage growth, and support the community’s future. PCEDA devotes attention and resources to attract new business by promoting available industrial sites, supporting infrastructure development, and connecting companies with local resources and partners. PCEDA assists businesses through the site selection and startup process, helping navigate permitting, utilities, workforce connections, and available incentive programs.

PCEDA also works closely with developers, real estate professionals, utility providers, and local governments to ensure Preston County is prepared for growth with suitable business locations, infrastructure, and housing opportunities. In addition to supporting local expansion efforts, PCEDA markets Preston County to outside companies and investors to encourage new job creation and long-term economic investment in the community.

What Support Does PCEDA Offer Small Businesses and Entrepreneurs?

Business success is a team sport, and the PCEDA is here to help entrepreneurs and small businesses get started in Preston County, with the knowledge and connections to help new business owners establish themselves in the local economic community. The PCEDA team provides advice, guidance, and valuable resources to those serious about starting a new business in Preston County. Integral services include:

    • Site selection
    • Securing financing
    • Financial education
    • Community networking
    • Marketing education

How Does PCEDA Support Workforce Development?

A strong county-wide workforce doesn’t happen by accident. It takes the commitment of many interconnected organizations across the region working toward a single goal. That goal is to educate, guide, and train individuals to achieve their personal career ambitions. When individuals feel empowered and knowledgeable, everyone benefits.
PCEDA helps support workforce development by working with businesses, local educational institutions, training providers, and community organizations to connect people with job opportunities and career training.

PCEDA also assists with workforce recruitment efforts, supports apprenticeship and internship programs, promotes career and technical education, and helps businesses identify training resources and available workforce incentives. The team also works with colleges, workforce development boards, and employers to better align training programs with local industry needs.

What Types of Marketing & Promotion Does PCEDA Do for Local Businesses?

The Preston County Economic Development Authority (PCEDA) supports local businesses by featuring local businesses, available properties, community events, workforce opportunities, and economic development projects throughout Preston County. PCEDA uses social media, website content, business spotlights, community partnerships, press releases, and regional marketing efforts to increase awareness of local businesses and investment opportunities.

PCEDA also works with chambers of commerce, tourism organizations, state agencies, and regional partners to market Preston County as a place to live, work, visit, and do business. Efforts include promoting industrial sites and buildings, highlighting local success stories, supporting business networking events, attending conferences and trade shows, sharing information about financing programs, and facilitating local business partnerships.
