    For movers who want a change of pace, West Virginia offers a desirable mix of affordable housing and breathtaking scenery. Approximately 42,020 people moved to the Mountain State in 2023, though this wasn’t enough to offset the decades-long population decline. For those that do decide to make the move, having the eighth most affordable cost of living and home prices 21% less than the national average is a major draw.

    However, the median household income of $55,394 can pose challenges for many movers, partially explaining why the most popular counties — Berkeley and Jefferson — are in close proximity to major hubs in neighboring Maryland and Virginia.
